RC Laser StuffClick on the links below to learn about why you need an RC Laser in your life! Latest Timcast22/02/12 - The breezometer at the boatyard this morning is spinning like a spinny thing on a spinny day. It's certainly breezy. As well as the breeze it is raining hard too and will more than likely continue this way until later in the day when the wind might die down a bit. |
RC Laser Racing @ Abersoch
We currently have a fleet of around a dozen boats at present and the fleet continues to grow at a good pace. Our meetings tend to be quite informal and friendly affairs and once everyone is on the water we have been having three or four races around a course laid out from the bank with three marks. Our sailing waters are very varied, from our winter location at Bryn Cethin caravan park, to the inner and outer harbour at Abersoch. Bryn Cethin has for the last couple of months provided a good meeting place on a Sunday morning for us to get to know our boats, the wind is pretty consistent and there is a handy path around the perimeter of the lake so boats can be relatively easily retrieved should something go wrong.
Bryn Cethin Lake The Harbour at Abersoch is quite tidal and therefore relies on reasonable planning to make sure there is enough water to sail in. On a good spring tide there can be enough water to give 3 - 4 hours of good sailing. The nature of the inner harbour means the wind is often quite flukey and on big winter tides there is a lot of water movement which can make for some tricky sailing.
Inner Harbour, neap tide The outer harbour offers a more consistent wind in both direction and strength. There were quite a few skippers out on 2nd January in very challanging conditions at the top end of the C rig with the gusts causing several "out of control" moments throughout the three races. The added hazard in the outer harbour is the number of trailing bits of line from mooring bouys, which makes mark rounding an interesting prospect at times!
Outer Harbour on a nice day! To date all three venues have proved to offer much and varied sailing, in both experience and conditions. With the onset of the new season here in Abersoch we will unfortunately lose the use of the lake at Bryn Cethin from March onwards, however we hope to add another, more sociable venue, to our armoury. SCYC should offer a great location on a summers evening, a great viewing platform, great sailing if the weather is right, with the bonus of having a bar, for apres sailing libations!
SCYC from the water We are currently working on becoming an MYA recognised club, when I suppose things might get a bit more serious and we may have some structured race series on our various local waters. As an emerging club it would be good to hear from other clubs on how they have developed and maintained their RC Laser fleets over the years, and we'll extend a warm welcome to anyone who wants to turn up and join us, either as a regular or a visitor. Latest News22nd February 2012 Park & Launch a go go! Well we have 5 weeks until we crank up our newly fettled tractors for the 2012 Park & Launch season. We are hoping that the season will bring some great boating weather too so that everyone can get out on their boats more than last season. If you still haven't seen the light and you are getting your boat launched elsewhere, give us a call or drop us an email and we'll get you booked on to the yard for 2012. Take a look at our Park & Launch page for more details 14th February 2012 Happy Valentines Day! As well as being a day for buying pointless rubbish for your loved one and generally being too soppy for your own good today will be remembered as the day we launched our For Sale page on the website. It's a pretty self explanatory page, you want to sell something down here in Abersoch and we can advertise it for you. We'll probably have more success advertising boaty type stuff, but if you need to sell you patio heater or even a bbq, send us some details and we'll stick it on the page of you!
9th February 2012 A Boatshow, of sorts! ![]() Having had some success with the RC Lasers Tim has now taken it upon himself to promote the class to a wider audience. With this in mind Tim and his bucket of enthusiasm will be helping out on the MYA stand at The Dinghy Show at Ally Pally on 3rd & 4th March. The MYA is much like the RYA but for model yachts and has over 2000 members in more than 100 clubs accross the UK. We hope to promote not only the RC Laser that we love so much, but also the other classes sailed under the MYA umbrella. If you're in town pop along and say hello!
