Including how to re-thread your winchline!
Congratulations on your purchase of our upgrade kit for your RC Laser, all boats supplied by us here at Abersoch Boatyard Services Ltd come equipped with this kit as standard as it is much better than the standard kit.
Please take the time to make a cup of tea / coffee and read through these instructions before you actually start the job. It should all make sense but if you need some further guidance please either drop Tim an email or give him a call.
You will need a couple of small Philips screwdrivers, a cigarette lighter, scissors, Vaseline or similar and that should allow you to complete the job which should take no more than an hour on your first attempt. The main thing is don't be scared of it, if you have an ounce of common sense you'll be fine!
1 x Winch line, the one with the knot and ball in it.
1 x Mainsheet, the one with the speedclip on it
2 x Elastic
3 x Outhauls
3 x Downhauls
6 x Speedclips
Before you start make sure that your winch is full in and the fine adjuster is also full in, so the sail would be in as tight as you could make it if it were attached.
Firstly you'll need to remove the old line from the winch drum, a pair of scissors will do the trick here.
Remove the bridge, being careful as it is quite fragile, and also the pot lid, this is a good place to keep the screws from the winch and bridge.
Now remove the winch drum and discard all the old sheeting line.
Now it is time to thread the new winch line, hold the winch drum so that the recess with the fixing hole is facing you, now take the sheet line with the knot and ball in it and feed the long end of the line through the bottom hole in the drum. Now make five turns clockwise around the drum.
Thread the short end of the line through the top hole and make three turns anti - clockwise around the drum.
Place it back on the winch, but do not put the fixing screw in just yet.
Feed the long end of the line through the bow pulley.
Where it exits the pulley you should now tie a thumb knot, or a bowline to make a loop. You will have quite a bit of line left over, do not trim this yet.
Make a similar loop in the short end so the loops are about 5cm apart.
Now put the elastic to join the two loops and run it twice round and tie off with two or three knots pulled as tight as you can without snapping the elastic! Trim the ends to leave about 1cm.
Use the tail from the front loop and attach it to the rear loop, this keeps you sailing should the elastic snap.
The next step is to put the boat on its stand and add a B rig to it, no need for the keel it isn't going anywhere.
Attach the new mainsheet to the boom slider with the speedclip, feed the sheet through the brass eye and tie it off on the loop nearest the front of the boat so that the sail is as close to the centre of the boat as you can get it. You probably won't get it all the way in.
Now take off the winch drum, watch out there will be some tension on it, and turn it so that the sail is dead centre.
Now replace the drum and fixing screw and put the bridge back on remembering to put some Vaseline under both drum and bridge.
Turn on your transmitter and boat and adjust the fine adjuster so that the boom sits over the rear quarter of the boat.
You can now switch off, remove the rig and put the boat back on the table for the final couple of steps.
Carefully trim the tails of the lines, burn with a lighter and then add some thin superglue to make sure that your hard work doesn't come undone!
Relax with another cup of tea.
This setup should last well and it is used on my own raceboat to good effect, the only part that might need changing is the elastic which over time does stretch, but its ok we've included one for you!

Downhauls (inc Downhaul Kit)
There is plenty of cordage to make downhauls for three rigs included, and also speedclips to suit. If you do not currently have downhauls on your rigs you will need 2 x boom sliders per rig, available from us.
Congratulations on your purchase of a downhaul kit for your RC Laser. If you received this instruction sheet as part of the Upgrade kit please ignore the contents and move straight to the method!
Downhaul cord (there is plenty here)
2 xBoom sliders
1 x Speedclip
4 x finger protectors
1. Push the two boom sliders onto the front end of the boom.
2. Rig your chosen sail as usual.
3. Thread the downhaul cord through the front eyelet on the sail.
4. Pass both ends through the first boom slider.
5. Feed the speedclip onto one end of the cord.
6. Tie a thumbknot to secure the speedclip.
7. Trim the excess cord, burn the ends and add superglue to stop the knot coming undone.
8. Add the balls to the sliders with superglue, job done!

There is enough cord to make three outhauls with plenty left over!
The idea is to have a 3 to 1 system which can be effected in two ways depending on how you store your sails.
Firstly tie a bowline in the cringle at the back edge of the sail leaving a smallish loop.
Run the tail though the boom slider then either back through the cringle (if you keep you sails rigged) or back through the loop, (if you derig your sails), then back through the slider again and to the outhaul boom slider, which should have the speedclip attached to it already.
I have found that setting the outhaul up so that it is as tight as you will ever sail it gives more than enough adjustment throughout the rigs range.
Picture below, this sail is set up to be left rigged all the time. If you are going down that route just make sure that the tension is taken off the sail when it is being stored.

Bank Holiday Incoming! Without actually doing a Timcast it looks like the Early birds on Saturday will get some boating in, Sunday looks like a windy pub day and Monday looks reasonable at the moment. It looks mainly dry for the duration which is good news.

Happy New Season! Yet again we've been super busy with everything apart from the website, hopefully we are now able to find a little more time to make regular updates to the site during the coming season which got underway in late March. The Yard is once again full for the 2017 season with a mix of old and new customers. Here's hoping we have a great boating season and who knows there might even be a Timcast or two!
